We recently started working with Fractions. It has been amazing to watch and listen as everyone discovers that they, too, can add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Though you and I (adults) both know that you do not have much simplifying to do if you look for the lowest common denominator when adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators BUT.......we have discovered in class that if you just multiply the denominators of the fractions with the unlike denominators, you can find a common denominator more efficiently and go on with identifying the equivalent fractions with like denominators. After you solve the problem, we have discovered that we still need to simplify to the lowest terms and that we will get there!
Check soon for a picture of a students work doing just this!
